Essa è dedicata a San Tommaso di Canterbury: secondo la leggenda una nave che trasportava colonne corinzie per la costruzione di una chiesa dedicata al santo in Inghilterra, in seguito a una tempesta, arenò a Marsala. Interpretato l’evento come un segno divino, i marsalesi fecero erigere la chiesa nel 1177 circa. All’interno pregevoli opere artistiche. Sculture di Domenico Gagini, Antonello Gagini e Giacomo Gagini.

The Mother Church of Marsala called Matrice is a church on a basilica base with a cathedral façade. It is dedicated to Saint Thomas of Canterbury: according to legend, a ship carrying Corinthian columns for the construction of a church dedicated to the saint in England ran aground in Marsala following a storm. Having interpreted the event as a divine sign, the people of Marsala had the church built in around 1177. Inside are valuable artistic works. PALAZZO SENATORIO “VII APRILE “

Edificato a partire dalla seconda metà del 1500 al posto della preesistente loggia dei Pisani e completato nel secolo 18°, il palazzo si presenta con elementi architettonici del settecento con richiami al classicismo cinquecentesco del Palladio. La facciata, aperta a doppio loggiato, è contraddistinta da aperture ad arco che poggiano su colonne affiancate da due stretti spazi rettangolari aperti; La parte centrale, si erge a torre accogliendo un orologio e, in alto, un vano quadrangolare aperto ad archi, inserito successivamente. Il palazzo ha un aspetto monumentale perché presenta anche una breve scalinata che funge da basamento. Oggi nell’edificio si svolgono le riunioni del Consiglio Comunale. Si chiama VII Aprile in ricordo di un’insurrezione contro i Borboni poco prima dello sbarco di Garibaldi.

Built starting from the second half of the 1500s in place of the pre-existing Pisan loggia and completed in the 18th century, the palace features eighteenth-century architectural elements with references to Palladio’s sixteenth-century classicism. Construit à partir de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle à la place de la loggia pisane préexistante et achevé au XVIIIe siècle, le palais présente des éléments architecturaux du XVIIIe siècle avec des références au classicisme de Palladio du XVIe siècle. La façade, ouverte sur une double loggia, se caractérise par des ouvertures cintrées qui reposent sur des colonnes flanquées de deux espaces rectangulaires ouverts étroits ; La partie centrale s’élève comme une tour abritant une horloge et, au-dessus, une salle quadrangulaire ouverte sur des arcs, insérés ultérieurement. Le bâtiment a un aspect monumental car il possède également un petit escalier qui fait office de base. Aujourd’hui, les séances du conseil municipal ont lieu dans le bâtiment. On l’appelle VII Aprile en souvenir d’une insurrection contre les Bourbons peu avant le débarquement de Garibaldi.

Der Palast wurde ab der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts anstelle der bereits bestehenden pisanischen Loggia erbaut und im 18. Jahrhundert fertiggestellt. Der Palast weist architektonische Elemente aus dem 18. Jahrhundert mit Anspielungen auf Palladios Klassizismus aus dem 16. Jahrhundert auf. Die zu einer Doppelloggia hin offene Fassade zeichnet sich durch gewölbte Öffnungen aus, die auf Säulen ruhen, die von zwei schmalen, offenen, rechteckigen Räumen flankiert werden. Der zentrale Teil erhebt sich wie ein Turm, in dem sich eine Uhr befindet, und darüber ein viereckiger Raum mit später eingefügten Bögen. Das Gebäude wirkt monumental, da es auch über eine kurze Treppe verfügt, die als Sockel dient. Heute finden in dem Gebäude die Sitzungen des Stadtrats statt. Der Name VII Aprile erinnert an einen Aufstand gegen die Bourbonen kurz vor Garibaldis Landung.

La fachada, abierta a una doble logia, se caracteriza por aberturas arqueadas que descansan sobre columnas flanqueadas por dos estrechos espacios rectangulares abiertos; La parte central se eleva a modo de torre que alberga un reloj y, arriba, una sala cuadrangular abierta por arcos, insertada posteriormente. El edificio tiene un aspecto monumental porque además cuenta con una corta escalera que hace de base. Hoy en día se celebran en el edificio las reuniones del Ayuntamiento. Se llama VII Abril en memoria de una insurrección contra los Borbones poco antes del desembarco de Garibaldi.

The museum is located on the Capo Boéo seafront, within the archaeological area of Lilibeo (ancient Marsala), adjacent to the current town centre. The museum headquarters is the Baglio Anselmi, a building born at the end of the last century as a wine factory for the production of “Marsala”. The museum exhibits the incredible wreck of a Punic war ship that is more than 2200 years old and illustrates the history of Lilybaeum and the territory connected to it, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

Si racconta che la Madonna apparve in sogno al frate agostiniano Leonardo Savina chiedendogli di cercare nella “terra della cava” un suo simulacro nascosto e di erigere su quel luogo una chiesa a lei intitolata. Dopo quattro anni di scavi – durante i quali il frate fu accusato di essere un visionario – la statuetta, una piccola scultura di 18 cm di materiale ancora non identificato, venne alla luce dal fondo di un pozzo il 19 gennaio 1518. Questa data ora è dedicata alla “Patrona di Marsala”, eletta protettrice della Città e celebrata con lo scampanio mattutino delle chiese del centro, messa e processione pomeridiane. Una vasta documentazione testimonia i molti miracoli che si verificarono dopo il ritrovamento dell’immagine. Singolare il fatto che la statuetta fosse andata nuovamente perduta e ritrovata una seconda volta nel 1943 tra le macerie del santuario. L’attuale santuario è solo l’ultimo luogo in cui il simulacro della patrona marsalese è stato custodito, esposto e venerato nei secoli. Altri tre edifici, infatti, hanno svolto queste funzioni sovrapponendosi nel tempo: il primo fu la grotta in cui la statuetta fu ritrovata nel 1518; il secondo, la chiesa a navata unica costruita al di sopra della cripta nel 1607; il terzo, infine, fu la maestosa chiesa a tre navate edificata tra il 1850 e il 1859, poi rasa al suolo l’11 Maggio 1943 durante un bombardamento . All’ingresso dell’antica grotta, dalla volta granitica e con il leggendario pozzo al centro, restano tracce di uno tra i monasteri più antichi al mondo con i suoi 500 e più anni e, sotto il pavimento, si trovano dei vani che furono adibiti a cimitero. Accanto all’altare che ospita il tabernacolo si trova un altro varco con altre due stanze.

It is said that the Madonna appeared in a dream to the Augustinian friar Leonardo Savina asking him to look for a hidden simulacrum of her in the “land of the quarry” and to build a church named after her on that place. After four years of excavations – during which the friar was accused of being a visionary – the statuette, a small 18cm sculpture of still unidentified material, came to light from the bottom of a well on 19 January 1518. This date is now dedicated to the “Patroness of Marsala”, elected protector of the city and celebrated with the morning ringing of the churches in the centre, mass and procession in the afternoon. Vast documentation testifies to the many miracles that occurred after the discovery of the image. Singular is the fact that the statuette was lost again and found a second time in 1943 among the rubble of the sanctuary. The current sanctuary is only the last place where the simulacrum of the Marsala patron saint has been kept, displayed and venerated over the centuries. Three other buildings, in fact, have carried out these functions overlapping over time: the first was the cave in which the statuette was found in 1518; the second, the single-nave church built above the crypt in 1607; the third, finally, was the majestic three-nave church built between 1850 and 1859, then razed to the ground on 11 May 1943 during a bombing. At the entrance of the ancient cave, with its granite vault and the legendary well in the centre, there remain traces of one of the oldest monasteries in the world with its 500 years or more and, under the floor, there are rooms that were used to cemetery. Trois autres bâtiments ont en effet exercé ces fonctions qui se sont superposées au fil du temps : le premier était la grotte dans laquelle la statuette a été retrouvée en 1518 ; la seconde, l’église à nef unique construite au-dessus de la crypte en 1607 ; la troisième, enfin, est la majestueuse église à trois nefs construite entre 1850 et 1859, puis rasée le 11 mai 1943 lors d’un bombardement. A l’entrée de l’ancienne grotte, avec sa voûte en granit et le puits légendaire au centre, subsistent les traces de l’un des monastères les plus anciens du monde avec ses 500 ans ou plus et, sous le sol, se trouvent des pièces qui servaient à au cimetière. Eine umfangreiche Dokumentation zeugt von den vielen Wundern, die nach der Entdeckung des Bildes geschahen. Einzigartig ist die Tatsache, dass die Statuette erneut verloren ging und 1943 in den Trümmern des Heiligtums ein zweites Mal gefunden wurde. Das heutige Heiligtum ist nur der letzte Ort, an dem im Laufe der Jahrhunderte das Abbild des Schutzpatrons von Marsala aufbewahrt, ausgestellt und verehrt wurde. Tatsächlich haben drei weitere Gebäude diese Funktionen im Laufe der Zeit überschnitten: Das erste war die Höhle, in der die Statuette 1518 gefunden wurde; die zweite, die 1607 über der Krypta erbaute einschiffige Kirche; Die dritte schließlich war die majestätische dreischiffige Kirche, die zwischen 1850 und 1859 erbaut und am 11. Mai 1943 bei einem Bombenangriff dem Erdboden gleichgemacht wurde. Am Eingang der antiken Höhle mit ihrem Granitgewölbe und dem legendären Brunnen in der Mitte sind noch Spuren eines der ältesten Klöster der Welt mit über 500 Jahren und unter dem Boden zu sehen, in denen Räume genutzt wurden zum Friedhof. Después de cuatro años de excavaciones, durante las cuales el fraile fue acusado de visionario, la estatuilla, una pequeña escultura de 18 cm realizada con material aún no identificado, salió a la luz del fondo de un pozo el 19 de enero de 1518. Esta fecha está ahora dedicada al “Patrona de Marsala”, elegida protectora de la ciudad y celebrada con repique de iglesias del centro por la mañana, misa y procesión por la tarde. Una amplia documentación atestigua los numerosos milagros que ocurrieron tras el descubrimiento de la imagen. Singular es el hecho de que la estatuilla se perdió nuevamente y fue encontrada por segunda vez en 1943 entre los escombros del santuario. El santuario actual es sólo el último lugar donde se ha conservado, expuesto y venerado a lo largo de los siglos el simulacro del santo patrón de Marsala. De hecho, otros tres edificios han desempeñado estas funciones superponiéndose en el tiempo: el primero fue la cueva en la que se encontró la estatuilla en 1518; la segunda, la iglesia de una sola nave construida sobre la cripta en 1607; la tercera, finalmente, fue la majestuosa iglesia de tres naves construida entre 1850 y 1859 y luego arrasada el 11 de mayo de 1943 durante un bombardeo. AREA ARCHEOLOGICA DI SAN GIROLAMO

Un’area archeologica in pieno centro città. Un sito a cielo aperto di rilievo. I reperti di questa zona si possono datare in due diverse epoche: la prima risale al periodo punico con interessanti ritrovamenti utili a ricostruire l’epoca della vita di Lilibeo ( l’antica Marsala), la seconda si può datare come medievale, con alcuni pozzi e l’angolo di un edificio. Lo scavo effettuato ha fornito altri elementi importanti per la ricostruzione della vita dell’antica Lilibeo tra cui la spina di un grande edificio che attraversa da nord a sud l’area e racchiude un grande isolato sepolto dal convento, dentro il quale erano conservate grondaie in ceramica grezza che incanalavano l’acqua piovana.

An archaeological area in the city center. An important open-air site. The finds in this area can be dated to two different eras: the first dates back to the Punic period with interesting findings useful for reconstructing the era of Lilibeo’s life (ancient Marsala), the second can be dated as medieval, with some wells and the corner of a building. The excavation carried out provided other important elements for the reconstruction of the life of ancient Lilybaeum, including the spine of a large building which crosses the area from north to south and encloses a large block buried by the convent, inside which gutters in rough ceramics that channeled rainwater.

Une zone archéologique en centre-ville. Un site important à ciel ouvert. Les découvertes dans cette zone peuvent être datées de deux époques différentes : la première remonte à la période punique avec des découvertes intéressantes utiles pour reconstituer l’époque de la vie de Lilibeo (l’ancienne Marsala), la seconde peut être datée comme médiévale, avec quelques puits et le coin d’un immeuble. Les fouilles réalisées ont fourni d’autres éléments importants pour la reconstitution de la vie de l’ancienne Lilybée, parmi lesquels l’épine dorsale d’un grand bâtiment qui traverse la zone du nord au sud et renferme un grand bloc enterré par le couvent, à l’intérieur duquel se trouvent des gouttières en céramique brute qui eaux de pluie canalisées.

Die Funde in dieser Gegend können auf zwei verschiedene Epochen datiert werden: Die erste stammt aus der punischen Zeit und enthält interessante Funde, die für die Rekonstruktion der Lebenszeit Lilibeos nützlich sind (altes Marsala), die zweite kann als mittelalterlich datiert werden, mit einigen Brunnen und dem Ecke eines Gebäudes. Il Santuario Maria SS. dell’Addolorata viene chiamato anche “Madonna del Fulmine” la leggenda dice che un fulmine colpì il cavallo di un giovane fedele che si era fermato a pregare e conseguentemente fu gridato al miracolo per aver risparmiato la vita del ragazzo. La Chiesa dell’Addolorata si trova accanto a Porta Garibaldi, in una delle piazze più belle della città, ed è stata completata alle fine del ‘700 ampliando l’edificio costruito in precedenza. All’interno della Chiesa, si trova la statua della Madonna Addolorata, particolarmente cara ai marsalesi per la forte espressività dei lineamenti del volto. Chiesa a croce latina con un’alta cupola rivestita di maioliche verdi. Nell’abside degli angioletti svolazzanti tengono la Sindone, ai lati la Speranza e la Carità, ai piedi la Legge Divina e la Fede. Dominano la facciata, ricca di decorazioni barocche di particolare bellezza, le quattro colonne tortili corinzie e i due campanili che si affacciano sulla Piazza del Purgatorio.
Oggi è adibita a concerti e conferenze.

Die Fassade ist reich an barocken Verzierungen von besonderer Schönheit und wird von den vier korinthischen Spiralsäulen und den beiden Glockentürmen dominiert, die die Piazza del Purgatorio überblicken.
Heute wird es für Konzerte und Konferenzen genutzt.

Il Museo Internazionale delle Marionette Antonio Pasqualino è stato istituito nel 1975 dall’Associazione per la Conservazione delle Tradizioni Popolari.
Esprime la volontà di salvaguardare una forma preziosa di teatro nella nostra storia. Il museo ospita una collezione di 5000 pezzi provenienti da tutto il mondo; dispone inoltre di una libreria con ben 30000 volumi , un ricco archivio fotografico, di una videoteca e di una nastroteca con registrazioni di spettacoli di teatro di marionette provenienti da diversi paesi. Tra le varie iniziative promosse troverete l’attività teatrale volta sia alla produzione di spettacoli innovativi che alla promozione del tradizionale spettacolo di marionette, visite guidate con videoproiezioni, dimostrazioni di tecniche di manovra, etc.

The Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum was established in 1975 by the Association for the Conservation of Popular Traditions.
It expresses the will to safeguard a precious form of theater in our history. The museum houses a collection of 5000 pieces from all over the world; it also has a library with 30000 volumes, a rich photographic archive, a video library and a tape library with recordings of puppet theater performances from various countries. Among the various initiatives promoted you will find the theatrical activity aimed at both the production of innovative shows and the promotion of the traditional puppet show, guided tours with video projections, demonstrations of maneuvering techniques, etc.
The museum is located inside the former “Hôtel de France”, a building of great architectural and historical interest, in the historic center of Palermo, a few steps from the monumental Piazza Marina.

In addizione alle numerose specie di pappagalli esotici rari, come Ara e Conuri, è possibile osservare cicogne, fenicotteri, pellicani rosa e uccelli autoctoni oggi estinti in Sicilia, come l’avvoltoio Capovaccaio, il Pollo Sultano, il Francolino, il Gufo e il Cavaliere d’Italia. Sono presenti anche dei cerbiatti.
